2002 Dodge Dakota Timing Cover Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Cover on 2002 Dodge Dakota?
A: First, pull out the battery negative cable and empty out the cooling system. Remove these items from the engine: serpentine belt, water pump, power steering pump and vibration damper. Undo the bolts holding the oil pan cover, remove the front bolts on each side and then remove the cover bolts and careful remove the chain case cover and gasket, taking care not to harm the oil pan gasket. Push the crankshaft oil seal toward the outside from inside the timing cover without harming the timing cover's sealing surface. Always clean the contact areas of the chain case cover and cylinder block before installation. Install a new cover gasket and place the chain cover on its mounting ports, adding only a small dab of Mopar GEN II Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant between the gaskets first, then loosely tighten the timing chain cover bolts by hand. If you change the chain cover, take care to block off the oil hole that is on the passenger side. Set the cover and seal flush against the crankshaft using Special Tool 6635 and put the tool over the crankshaft. Tighten the cover over the chain case to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) and tighten the bolts on the oil pan to 24 Nm (215 inch lbs.). Unplug Special Tool 6635, check the vibration damper's seal on the shutoff flange and replace the vibration damper, power steering pump, water pump and serpentine belt. Put in the cooling system fan and set the fan shroud into place, using bolts torqued to 11 Nm (95 inch lbs.). Fill your coolant system and secure the negative cable back to the battery.
