2001 Dodge Dakota Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Cover on 2001 Dodge Dakota?
A: To begin, open the hood, pull off the negative battery cable and then get rid of the accessory drive belt. After that, remove the accessory drive brackets from the timing case cover and then get rid of the fan and its hub along with the fan shroud. When you have one, take out the A/C compressor and generator bracket assembly from the engine cylinder head and keep it on the side. After that, get rid of the vibration damper, then undo the bolts on the oil pan and timing case cover and next, remove the timing case cover and gasket. With a pry bar, remove the crankshaft oil seal from near the timing cover's front. Wipe down the edges of the timing case cover, oil pan and cylinder block gasket, then add a new crankshaft oil seal in the timing case cover so the open end is inside, holding it in place with Seal Installation Tool 6139. Put the timing gasket on the cylinder block and then place the timing case cover on the gasket and on the oil pan. Connect Timing Case Cover Alignment and Seal Installation Tool 6139 to the crankshaft hole in the cover and install bolts connecting the timing case cover and cylinder block and between the timing case cover and oil pan. Secure the 1/4 inch cover-to-block bolts by hand to 7 Nm, tighten the 5/16 inch front cover-to-block ones to 22 Nm and the oil pan-to-cover bolts to 9.5 Nm. Remove the alignment tool for the cover, film the hub surface of the seal with engine oil and fix the vibration damper in place. After removing the parts, put back both the A/C compressor and generator bracket assembly and the engine fan and hub assembly with shroud. Loop the accessory drive belt over the pulleys, along with the V-belt and now tighten it according to the step-by-step instructions in your owner's manual. Then, link the negative cable back to the battery.
