2002 Dodge Dakota Piston Ring Set Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Properly Install a Piston Ring Set on 2002 Dodge Dakota?
A: Before measuring, move the piston ring 2 inches from the bottom of the bore and use an inverted piston to fit the rings squarely before you measure the gap. The range for the top compression ring is 0.254 - 0.508 mm (0.010 - 0.020 inch), for the second compression ring it is 0.508 - 0.762 mm (0.020 - 0.030 inch) and for the oil ring it is 0.254 - 1.270 mm (0.010 - 0.050 inch). If the end gap is too small, rings can be adjusted by filing, but if you find too many gaps you are better off not using these. When putting in the oil control rings, avoid harming the piston and make certain to install the oil rail spacer first, along with the side rails, then the upper and lower rails using hand pressure. With marking facing up and the chamfer facing you, use installation tool C-4184 to add the second compression rings. Install the top chamfer onto the top housing with the identification mark facing up and with the chamfer-facing-up part of the module up also. The distance between the piston ring and the ring land in all directions, called the side clearance, should be 0.074 - 0.097 mm (0.0029 - 0.0038 inch) for the compression rings, 0 mm for the steel rail oil ring, not exceeding 0.246 mm (0.0097 inch). Make sure that the top compression ring faces downward 90° from the oil ring and that the second compression ring faces upward 90° from it.
