2002 Dodge Durango Drive Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Repair a Drive Shaft on 2002 Dodge Durango?
A: Start the service and repair of the drive/propeller shaft by raising the vehicle at the axles and allowing everything to turn freely. Get rid of any bearing snap rings that are on the outside of the universal joint to help the inclinometer base lie flat against the joint. Screw the shaft into the extension until you can see the transmission output yoke bearing cap down below. Put the inclinometer on either the center cap of the yoke bearing or the pinion flange ring horizontally across the shaft, line up the bubble and note down this reading, representing the Output Yoke Angle. After that, rotate the propeller shaft 90 degrees and put the inclinometer on the yoke bearing cap so that the bubble is centered, taking this angle measurement or assessing it from the rear end of the shaft which represents the propeller shaft angle. The output operating angle for the transmission is the difference between the larger and smaller figures. Next, move the propeller shaft 90 degrees more and put the inclinometer on the bearing cap, rotating it so the bubble centers. This gives you the yoke or pinion angle you need to write down. Take the difference of the smaller figure and the larger to find out the axle Input Operating Angle. Cancelling U joint operating angles within 1° should be done, along with keeping all angles below 3° and having one axis with a minimum continuous operating angle of half a degree.
