2002 Dodge Durango Fuel Rail Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Properly Service and Install a Fuel Rail on 2002 Dodge Durango?
A: The fuel rail should not be serviced until the fuel system pressure is released, as it keeps at pressure when the engine is shut off. The left and right rails should be swapped as one unit and you need to ensure the connector tube is not bent or kinked as you take it off. To start, take out the fuel tank filler tube cap and then carry out the fuel system pressure release. Take out the negative battery cable, detach the air ducts from the throttle body and separate all wires connected to the generator behind it. Hold the fuel line latch at the fuel rail and squeeze the special tool over it to disconnect the line. Unplug the vacuum tubes from the throttle body and take off the electrical sockets at all eight fuel injectors, making note of the wiring locations if the harness is not marked by the OEM. Separate the electrical plugs on the throttle body, MAP and IAT sensors, as well as the initial three ignition coils located on all banks. One by one, take out the four fuel rail bolts and obviously move and remove the fuel rail once all of the injectors have cleared the holes in the cylinder head. Should the fuel injectors be fitted, place a small amount of engine oil on each O-ring, maintain the assembly against the machined openings in the cylinder head and press each injector in, being careful not to damage the O-rings. Downward pressure on each side of the fuel rail should let the injectors fall into place. After that, tighten the four mounting bolts to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.). Replace the ignition coils, join the electric cables to the throttle body, MAP, IAT sensors and all fuel injectors, making sure they stay fastened. Put the vacuum hoses, fuel line clip and wiring back into the generator. Then, reinstall both the air box and air duct. Reconnect the battery after everything is done, start the vehicle and look for leaks.
