2002 Dodge Durango Starter Motor Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Starter Motor on 2002 Dodge Durango?
A: Before you touch the starter motor on a vehicle with a manual transmission, unplug the negative cable from the battery and lift the car to access it. Take out the plug securing the starter motor to the stud, then while keeping the starter motor held, eliminate the bolt that secures the starter motor to the transmission housing. If your vehicle has an automatic transmission, ease the transmission cooler tube bracket outwards on the tube, so you can take out the starter by the lower stud. Remove the starter motor from the front transmission enough so that you can access and easily unscrew the nut that holds the battery cable eyelet to the starter solenoid stud, supporting it on something other than the wire harness. Then, remove the wire from the solenoid terminal stud and take out the starter solenoid wire from the battery cable. Remove the transmission housing only after that. For installing the starter motor, connect its terminal wire harness to the solenoid receptacle on the transmission and position it well, both hands should be free when installing. Place the battery cable eyelet terminal onto the solenoid B(+) terminal stud and tighten the nut on it to 13.6 Nm (120 in. lbs.). Place the starter motor above the stud on the transmission housing and if you have an automatic transmission, slide the automatic transmission cooler tube bracket back to fit over the starter motor flange. Loosen the washers, then bolt and nut onto the starter and at the end tighten the bolt and nut to 67.8 Nm (50 ft. lbs.). Afterwards, raise the vehicle and hook the negative cable back up to the battery.
