2001 Dodge Durango Starter Motor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Starter Motor on 2001 Dodge Durango?
A: Begin by removing the negative battery cable, isolating the battery and make sure the vehicle is held in place and raised. Unscrew the nut holding the starter motor to the transmission housing stud and hold the starter motor as you take out the bolt securing it to the transmission housing. If the car uses an automatic transmission, push the transmission cooler tube bracket ahead on the tubes to free the starter motor from the lower mounting stud. Drop the starter motor far enough so that you can get to the nut for the battery cable, making sure it is firmly supported and won't hang from the wires. Also, remove the solenoid wire from the terminal stud on the solenoid and cut the connection between the battery cable solenoid wire and its point on the starter solenoid wire before removing the starter motor. Position the motor to the housing of the transmission and attach the battery cable solenoid harness to the starter solenoid, again supporting it during installation. Attach the end of the battery cable eyelet terminal to the solenoid B(+) terminal and tighten the nut securing it to 13.6 Nm (120 in. lbs.). Put the starter motor in place on top of the stud on the transmission housing and if you have an automatic transmission, push the automatic transmission cooler tube bracket backward on the tubes and over the starter motor flange. Fit the washers, bolt and nut onto the starter and tighten the bolt and nut to 67.8 Nm (50 ft. lbs.) Hold on to another bolt and nut as discussed before.) When you're done, release the vehicle and link the negative battery cable again.
