2002 Dodge Neon Timing Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Belt with a Mechanical Tensioner on 2002 Dodge Neon?
A: To start the process, set the crankshaft sprocket's arrow to TDC on the housing; after that, pull the tensioner back to three notches before TDC. After that, bring the camshaft to TDC by matching the mark on the sprocket with the arrow on the back timing belt cover. Hold the crankshaft in place at the 1/2 mark from TDC before putting on the belts. Attach the timing belt to the crankshaft first, next direct it around the water pump sprocket, around the camshaft sprocket and finally to the timing belt tensioner pulley. Move the crankshaft sprocket to top dead center so any slack in the belt vanishes. Slip an Allen wrench with a 6 mm head into the top plate bay on the belt tensioner pulley and turn it counterclockwise until the notch on the setting aligns with the spring tang. With the top plate steady, tighten the lock nut on the tensioner to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) so the notch and spring tang stay together. Remove these two tools from your box. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to get it to TDC and if you miss by rotation, carry on by two more turns in the clockwise direction without taking the fuel pump to TDC in the counterclockwise direction. Use your hands to turn the crankshaft clockwise two complete revolutions so the belt sits right, then ensure that the marks on the two shafts are properly aligned. If the spring tang falls inside the tolerance range, the installation is finished. If it's still not secure, do the tensioning process over again. Put in the timing belt cover up front and replace the lobse spark plugs. After that, attach the DRB 1116 scan tool to the data link connector found in the passenger compartment via the steering column, turn on the ignition switch and go to the Engine section in diagnostics, pick Miscellaneous and finally select ReLearn Cam Crank while following the displayed steps.
