To work on the timing belt and sprockets, before anything else, remove the timing belt cover and all the spark plugs. Adjust the timing marks by turning the engine clockwise using the
Crankshaft. Lose the nut on the timing belt tensioner and use a 6 mm Allen wrench to turn the belt tensioner top plate counterclockwise. Make sure not to turn the
Camshaft once the timing belt has been taken out in order to protect the valves. Remove the belt and next, using Special Tools C-4687 and Adaptor C-4687-1, rotate the crankshaft so the camshaft sprocket comes free. Remove the timing belt first and then take of the crankshaft sprocket with Special Tool 6793 and insert C-4685-C2. As you attach the crankshaft sprocket, remember the word "front" should be easy to see outside and use Special Tool 6792 to ensure the depth is right to prevent an off-track timing belt. With Special Tool C-4687 and modified Adaptor C-4687-1 in hand, fit the camshaft sprocket and tighten the bolt to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.), then install your timing belt. Draw the crankshaft sprocket to TDC by placing it where the arrow is on the oil pump and then back it up by 3 notches and for the camshaft, draw it to TDC by placing its mark on the sprocket where the arrow lies on the back timing belt cover. Start by relocating the crankshaft to 1/2 mark prior to TDC for belt fitting, after that place the timing belt at the crankshaft and guide it around the water pump sprocket, camshaft sprocket, then return it around the timing belt tensioner pulley at the back side. Place the crankshaft sprocket at TDC, push the belt forward, turn the pulley top plate counterclockwise until the notch is aligned with the spring and tighten the tensioner nut to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.). After tools are set aside, turn the crankshaft clockwise to its top dead center (TDC), make the crankshaft complete two revolutions clockwise so the belt is properly seated and see that the timing marks on camshaft and crankshaft are in the proper positions. Review the spring tang measurement; if it's outside the limits, try tensioning it once again. Finally, put the front timing belt cover in place, kick out the spark plugs and use the DRB III scan tool connected to the data link connector in the passenger area to perform a relearn of the camshaft and crankshaft timing.
