2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Automatic Transmission Filter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace the Automatic Transmission Filter in a 45RFE Transmission on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: The first step in replacing the fluid and filter in the 45RFE automatic transmission is to position a new primary oil filter seal directly against the oil pump body, making sure it does not move with a hammer. Making the seal move can hurt the transmission. After that, put the replacement filter on the valve body and into the oil pump, holding it with a screw turned to 4.5 Nm (40 inch lbs.). Should the cooler return filter be missing, replace it, torquing it to 14.12 Nm (125 inch lbs.). Squeeze a little Mopar RTV sealant around the sealing rim of the pan as it goes back into position, install the bolts and tighten them to 11.8 Nm (105 inch lbs.) torque. After that, bring the car down to the ground and put in Mopar ATF +4, type 9602 fluid.
