2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Van Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to safely service the Air Bag system on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Van?
A: First, turn off the air bag system by unplugging and blocking the battery negative cable and after two minutes, remove the battery. Be sure to use gloves, safety goggles and a long-sleeved shirt when you deal with a deployed air bag, since the cushion and the inside materials of the bag may contain irritants. The horn switch is included in the driver air bag unit which is why only authorized workers can repair it to prevent accidental use of the air bag. Make sure that foreign material does not enter the driver air bag or become fixed between it and the cover, since such a problem could cause injuries to someone in the event of a crash. The air bag trim cover should not be painted, because it might interfere with how the air bag works. When your air bag needs to be replaced, first unplug the car battery's negative cable and wait for two minutes before touching the air bags. Free up the driver air bag by removing two screws, then pull it away to connect with the wire harness. Take out the horn switch wire harness connector and the Clock Spring driver air bag pigtail wire connector, while making certain not to damage the pigtail connector. Take out the air bag located in the steering wheel. If a crash causes the air bag to inflate, you need to change the Clock Spring and the steering column. For assembly, join the trim cover to the air bag bolt, press for an audible snap in the driver air bag's clock spring connector and then snap the wire connector back on for the car's horn switch. Ensure that driver air bag is put in the steering wheel correctly, with no wires getting trapped and then install the two screws to 10 Nm (90 in. lbs.). air bag system verification is required before attaching the negative cable of the battery.
