2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Van Parking Brake Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the rear parking brake cables on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Van?
A: Release the parking brake, raise the vehicle and then work on the cables for the rear parking brake on the 1500 series. Relax the nut holding the cable adjuster and take the cables out of the rear cable lines. Loosen the tabs at the right rear cable's bracket by pulling the 1/2 wrench handle, then easily slide the cable through the cable bracket using your hand. After that, repeat the same action on the left rear cable at its mounting bracket on the frame. Take out the right rear cable from the connection on the brake hose bracket and remove the cable retainers from the axle. Remove both rear wheels and the brake drums, take away all cables from the park brake lever and get the parking brake cable guide spring out. Squeeze the cable tabs on all the cable housing retainers at the brake support plate then take out the cables from those plates. First, you should install the parking brake cable guide spring and the brake drums during installation. Lift the cable up and let it go into the support plate hole to anchor it to the park brake lever. Feed the cable housing through the support hole until the retaining tabs snap in place and afterwards confirm it is secure by pulling on the housing. Put the proper cable retainers on each part of the axle and feed the cable through the opening in the brake hose bracket. Pass both cables into the frame bracket, so the correct cable remains in the top hole and use the retainer tabs on the left side to secure them to the bottom hole. Install the rear cable into the mounting spot on the tensioner cable bracket and secure the retainer tabs. Join the cables to their proper connections, mount the wheel and tire assemblies back into place, adjust the park brake system and remove all supports before you lower the vehicle.
