2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Van Parking Brake Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the rear parking brake cable on 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Van?
A: Before working on the rear parking brake cable, free the parking brake and hoist the vehicle into position to work on it easily. Unwind the cable adjuster and take out the cables from the cable attachments. With a 1/2 inch boxed end wrench, press down on the tabs in the right rear cable housing retainer. After that, pull the cable through the tensioner cable bracket. In the same way, sqeeze the left rear cable's housing retainer tabs at the frame bracket and feed both wires through. Get rid of the right rear cable from its bracket, remove the cable retainers on the axle and take out each cable from the park brake lever. Pull the parking brake cable guide spring off and press in on each side of the cable retainer while prying the cables free from the support plates. Attach the back plate lever with the park brake cable and then put the parking brake cable guide spring in place for the installation. Make sure to pull the cable to attach it to the park brake lever and to lock its housing into place. Replace the brake cable retainers on the axle and run the cables right through the hole in the brake hose bracket, so they sit in the top hole of the frame bracket. First, keep the left cable housing retainer locked into the lower frame bracket opening, then remove the cable and fit it through the tensioner cable bracket to secure retainer tabs. After that, slot the cables into the cable connectors, adjust the park brake and lift the vehicle off the supports.
