2002 Dodge Ram 2500 Air Filter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Test and Replace the Air Filter on Diesel Engines on 2002 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: When testing the air cleaner on diesel engines, don't unnecessarily take off the top of the air cleaner housing. An air Filter Minder gauge in the air cleaner compartment helps you see when the air filter should be changed. The diaphragm and calibrated spring are included in the Filter Minder's plastic casing, along with a yellow disk attached to the diaphragm that slips up the marked scale. After stopping the engine, a ratcheting tool causes the air cleaner disc to read the maximum air restriction. When air pressure decreases, the air flow goes back to normal and the disc shows the drop size. Use extra care because some engine cleaners or degreasers might harm the plastic housing, so it is important to cover and tape the Filter Minder if you apply them. For testing, switch off the engine. If the mechanical or air filter is in the red zone, you need to replace it. Following the air filter change, press the rubber button on the Filter Minder to make the yellow disc go back to UP. If your gauge reads high but your filter appears clean, the conditions may have caused the reading; keep using the dry oven, lower the gauge, reset it and recheck after some time. To remove, first open the clamp holding the air inlet tube at the air cleaner housing inlet and remove the tube from its cover. There are four spring clips on the housing cover; when you press and lift these clips, the cover can be tilted upward and out. Remove the air filter from the car engine's housing. It is important to dust out the air cleaner housing before you put in the new air filter. Pull the air cleaner cover around the housing and fasten the spring clips onto the front to secure it. Tighten the air inlet tube back into place at the housing and adjust it to fit within the notches; tighten the hold-down clamp to 3 Nm (25 inch lbs.) torque.
