You should take the air cleaner assembly apart from the engine before removing the filter to keep from causing damage. Take out the air inlet tube from beside the housing of the air cleaner first. Relax the screw clamp fastening the air cleaner housing to the
Throttle Body so it does not come off, always noting the fabrication tabs along the clamp. Cut the breather hose going from the air cleaner housing at the back for all engines; if the engine is a 5.9L HDC V-8, remove the hose from the air pump as well. There's a rubber grommet installed on the bottom/front of the air cleaner and a stud attached to the
Intake Manifold secures the housing into this point; raise the assembly and remove it while it slides from the mounting stud. Look at the gasket at the throttle body and fix it if you see any damage. The housing cover attaches with three spring-loaded clips on the top and is hinged at the back. To detach it, release the first clip, the second and the third, then tilt it away from the back and upward. Pull out the existing air filter and clean inside the housing before you put in the new one. To put the cover on, use the tabs on the back of the unit and lock it with the three spring clips. Once the air cleaner housing is at the proper angle, put the rubber grommet on top of the stud and make sure the wing nut is below the top rim of the throttle body. Force the housing onto the rubber insert at the intake manifold and then tighten the throttle body-to-air cleaner housing clamp to 4 Nm (35 in. lbs.). Set the intake tube into the air cleaner housing, the breather hose and, if fitted on your bike, the secondary air tube.
