2002 Dodge Ram 2500 Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on a Diesel Engine on 2002 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: Before servicing or repairing the power steering pump on a diesel engine, remove and cap the steering pump and vacuum pump hoses, take out the sender from the block and plug the opening. After that, release the serpentine belt and block the oil feed line at its bottom end on the vacuum pump. Pull out the lower bolt that holds the vacuum and steering pump assembly to the block and remove the nut joining the bracket to the steering pump. Remove the bolt at the top of the pump, then pull out the pump assembly and unscrew the attaching nuts for the mounting gasket and steering pump to vacuum pump bracket. Slide the steering pump away from the bracket, ensuring the vacuum pump's internal oil seal is not damaged and take the two body spacers off. Installation starts by placing the spacers on the pump body and then turn the drive gear to connect the two drive dogs before installing the steering pump and checking that you don't damage the oil seal. Attach the vacuum pump bracket to the steering pump nuts, tightening them until they reach 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) and put a new vacuum pump gasket on the assembly, along with sealer if you need to. Put the pump assembly onto the engine, insert the steering pump stud into the block bracket and tighten the bolts securing the pump to 77 Nm (57 ft. lbs.). After that, join the steering pump to the bracket and tighten the nut to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.), then remove the drain plug and place in the oil sending unit along with its electrical connector. Connect the oil feed line to the vacuum pump, make sure it is tightened down to 7 Nm (60 inch lbs./5 ft. lbs.) and after that, connect all the fluid hoses to the power steering pump, tightening the pressure fitting on the pump to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.). After that, fit the hose onto the vacuum pump and secure it, install the serpentine belt, add power steering fluid to the reservoir, fire up the engine and test how the brakes function.
