2001 Dodge Ram 2500 Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on a Gasoline Engine on 2001 Dodge Ram 2500?
A: If servicing or repairing the power steering pump on a gasoline engine, start by taking off the serpentine belt and disconnecting the pump hoses, capping the outlets. After that, detach the battery ground cable and take the stud out of the cylinder head, but keep the stud attached to the bracket. Turn the upper bracket bolt counterclockwise and then remove the bolts on each side of the lower bracket. Turn the pump assembly so it's past the coolant tube, then undo the boss screw and upper bolt on the cylinder head which lets you remove the entire steering pump and bracket from the engine. Use Puller C-4333 to take off the pump pulley and access the pump attaching bolts; then, remove the front pump bracket and (on 8.0L engines only) the rear pump bracket. For installation, first install the front pump bracket and tighten its bolts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) and then for 8.0L, install the rear pump bracket and tighten its nut to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.); tighten the bolts for the rear pump to just 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). Connected with Installer C-4063-B, place the pump pulley inside and set the steering pump assembly onto the engine block, screwing in the upper stud and bolt on the bracket. Pull the pump down so that it is past the coolant tube and bolt both sides of the bracket to the lower part of the pump block, applying a tightening force of 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). Attach the hoses to the pump, place the serpentine drive belt, fill the power steering reservoir and complete the Power Stepping Pump Initial Operation.
