2002 Dodge Ram 2500 Van Ball Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the lower ball joint on 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 Van?
A: For the lower ball joint service and repair, begin by raising and supporting the vehicle. Remove the front wheel and tire once the vehicle is raised. Take the outer tie rod end off the knuckle, then take out the disc brake caliper and rotor. First, support the lower control arm, then eliminate the nuts and cotter pins that connect to the ball joints. Take the Ball Joint Remover C-3564-A, use the thread to put force on the lower ball joint and hit the knuckle with a hammer if you need extra help separating it. Unmount the ball joint seal and push the ball joint from the arm bore using the proper remover/installer. To place the ball joint, press it into the lower suspension arm with the remover, then fit the new seal onto the ball joint and attach it with a socket. Put the steering knuckle on the lower ball joint, add the retaining nut and tighten it to 183 Nm (135 ft. lbs.) when using an LD 11/16 bolt and to 237 Nm (175 ft. lbs.) when using a HD 3/4 bolt. Fit the outer tie rod end onto the steering knuckle and then add new cotter pins. Attach the rotor and the disc brake caliper, install the wheel and tire assembly, lower the vehicle and then check the wheel alignment.
