2002 Dodge Ram 3500 Camshaft Position Sensor Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Replace a Camshaft Position Sensor on 2002 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: On the back of the timing gear cover housing below the fuel injection pump is the camshaft position sensor (CMP). Before removing the CMP, first remove the negative cables from the batteries and tidy the space where the sensor is located. Next, break the electrical connection at the CMP, get rid of the bolt keeping the CMP in place and tug the CMP back toward you from the engine. Set a new O-ring on the CMP, using engine oil and wiping the area next to the hole where you'll insert the CMP. Avoid tearing the O-ring by twisting in the CMP into the gearbox cover and fastening the mounting bolt to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) torque. Last, plug the electrical connector back into the CMP and connect both negative cables to the batteries.
