2002 Dodge Ram 3500 Coil Springs Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair Coil Springs on 2002 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: To work on the coil spring, lift the vehicle and put it on a support, next take off the tire and wheel. After that, remove the brake caliper and the rotor. Detach the tie rod from the steering knuckle with Puller C-3894-A, remove the cotter pin and nut from the tie rod and release the stabilizer bar link from the lower suspension arm. After that, jack up the outboard end of the lower suspension arm from underneath it and place the jack just in advance of the shock mount. Pull out the cotter pin and nut from the lower ball joint and then pop the ball joint free with Remover C-4150A. Take the lower shock bolt out of the suspension arm and lower them both when the jack is removed, freeing up the spring and rubber isolator for removal. For installation, set the rubber isolator over the top of the spring and place the spring in the upper part of the spring seat. Hold the lower suspension arm up with a jack and set the spring into the lower suspension arm mount. Slot in the lower shock bolt and tighten it by using 142 Nm (105 ft. lbs.) of torque. Connect one end of the steering knuckle to the lower ball joint using its nut, tightening the nut to 136 Nm (about 110 ft. lbs.), then add the lower ball joint cotter pin. Place the stabilizer bar link onto the lower suspension arm, put the grommet, retainer and nut onto it and tighten to 37 Nm (27 ft. lbs.). Attach the tie rod end to the steering knuckle, secure it with a 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.) fastening nut and finalize the job by installing the cotter pin. Then, set the brake rotor and caliper assembly back in place, attach the tire and wheel to the hub, take the support out and drop the vehicle.
