2002 Dodge Ram 3500 Wheel Bearing Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair Wheel Bearings on the Rear Axle 286RBI on 2002 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: The process to service and repair Rear Axle 286RBI starts by ventilating the wheel and tire assembly and then the brake drum. Once you've done that, get rid of the axle shaft and then the lock wedge and adjustment nut with Stand Socket DD-1241-JD. Pull the front hub out so you can slide out the outer axle bearing. Put Installer 5064 and Handle C-4171 on the grease seal and inner bearing in the hub to pop them out and then use a brass drift and hammer to pull the bearing cups from the hub. When you install the hub, first clean all the axle bearings and the inside of the hub with a suitable cleaning solvent. Attach the bearing cups by using Installer 8153 and Handle C-4171 and then stuff the wheel bearing grease or identical oil into both the outer and inner bearings. Put some lubricant on the bearing cup area and fit the inner axle bearing into the hub. Install a new bearing grease seal using Installer 8152 and Handle C-4171, then look for burrs or roughness at the bearing and seal contact place on the axle tube spindle and remove them before setting or fixing the final drive. See to it that none of the grease seal touches the inside of the axle tube while you're installing it. Slip the hub onto the axle, add the outer axle bearing and lock the hub bearing adjustment nut with Socket DD-1241-JD, tightening it to between 163 to 190 Nm (120 to 140 ft. lbs.) as you rotate the wheel clockwise. Loosen the adjustment nut by a quarter turn to make the wheel bearing end play 0.001-inch to 0.010-inch, then tap the locking wedge into the spindle keyway and adjustment nut so the wedge is in a different position. After that, fit the axle shaft and brake drum before putting on the wheel and tire unit.
