2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Timing Chain Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Timing Chain on 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: First, take the negative cable off the battery, then take out the fan and shroud and remove the serpentine drive belt for service and repair of the timing chain and sprockets. After that, remove the crankshaft vibration damper and the timing case cover. Twist the crankshaft until you see that the "0" timing mark lines up with the camshaft sprocket timing mark. First, pull the oil slinger from the crankshaft, before taking out the camshaft sprocket bolt and washer. As a group, take out the crankshaft sprocket, camshaft sprocket and timing chain. While putting in the timing chain, correctly match the marks on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets, as this helps keep valve timing proper; if the chain deflects over 12.7 mm (1/2 in.), replace it. Make sure the timing marks of the timing chain, crankshaft sprocket and camshaft sprocket are in line before you put them together. With Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant, seal the keyway in the crankshaft, put the key in place and install the assembly on both the crankshaft and camshaft. Attach the camshaft sprocket bolt and its washer and tighten everything to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.) torque. Turn the crankshaft around two turns, watching to ensure that the camshaft and crankshaft sprocket timing marks are on the same side. Install the crankshaft oil slinger, change the oil seal in the timing case cover and put in the timing case cover and associated gasket. By wedging the key into the crankshaft keyway, add the vibration damper, the serpentine drive belt, the fan, the hub assembly and finally, the shroud. To finish, put the negative cable back on to the battery.
