2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Timing Chain Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Chain on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Remove the negative cable from the battery, then take out the fan and shroud before you take off the serpentine drive belt. After that, get rid of the crankshaft vibration damper and the timing case cover. Keep rotating the crankshaft so that the "0" mark on the crankshaft sits over the camshaft sprocket timing mark. Extract the oil slinger from the crankshaft and next take out the bolt and washer from the camshaft sprocket. Get rid of the crankshaft sprocket, camshaft sprocket and timing chain together as a unit. Correct installation requires the marks on the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets to be in line; you should replace the timing chain if it permits more than a 12.7 mm (1/2-inch) deflection. Place the chain so the timing marks on all parts line up. Add a layer of Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant Mopar to the crankshaft's keyway, put the key in and place the assembly onto the crankshaft and camshaft. Insert the camshaft sprocket bolt and the washer, followed by tightening the bolt to 68 Nm (50 ft. lbs.). Once the crankshaft is placed, turn it 2 revolutions to make sure the timing marks on the crank and cam sprockets match. Fit the crankshaft oil slinger, change the oil seal inside the timing case cover and set onto place the timing case cover and gasket. Before you install the vibration damper, put the key in the crankshaft keyway and follow up with the serpentine drive belt, fan, hub assembly and shroud. In the end, link the negative cable from the charger to the battery.
