2002 Jeep Liberty Fuel Rail Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install a Fuel Rail on 2002 Jeep Liberty?
A: Open the fuel release valve, take out the cap of the fuel tank filler tube and disconnect the negative side of the battery cable. Remove the air duct from where it connects to the throttle body, release the fuel line with a special tool and remove any needed vacuum lines at the throttle body. First, release the engine coolant, then take out the thermostat and the thermostat housing and afterward the PCV hose and valve from the valve cover. Open the two lower bolts on the upper intake manifold and take out the three upper mounting bolts. At the back of the intake manifold, remove the connectors from the engine harness and the two mounts from the injection wiring harness. Separate the ends of the electrical connectors at all the fuel injectors and mark each injector with its factory label. Take out the two bolts holding the injection rail in place, sway the rail gently while staying near and lift it off the intake once the injectors clear. When installing, wash the injector bores in the manifold and line each O-ring of the injectors with a small amount of engine oil. Place the fuel rail/fuel injector unit into the openings, making sure the injectors go into the cylinder head without breaking the O-rings. Manually push the fuel rail down until the injectors fit properly, then fix and tighten the pair of fuel rail mounts. Make sure the electric connectors are secure at the fuel injectors and then plug the injection wiring harness clips into their mounting brackets. Connect the main engine harness, tighten the bolts holding the intake manifold in place and put back the PCV valve, thermostat and radiator hose, adding coolant before you pour water into the radiator. Join the appropriate vacuum lines, add the fuel line and latch clip, mount the air duct, replace the battery cable and finally test for any leaks by starting the vehicle.
