2002 Jeep Wrangler Rocker Arm Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Rocker Arm on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: The first thing to do in repairing the rocker arm assembly is remove the engine cylinder head cover and check if any rocker arm bridges are misaligned with the valve tips. Open the bridge and pivot assemblies by loosening the capscrews one turn at a time, moving from one side to the other side to protect the bridges. Remove the bridges, pivots, matching rocker arms and finally the push rods. Place every item on a bench so it still has the same order as when you took it off the motor. Klean all components in solvent and blast compressed air through the oil passages in the rocker arms and push rods. Look at every rocker arm's pivot and if any are scuffed, pitted, cracked or badly worn, you should replace them and look for deep pits on the valve stem tip contact surface as well. Inspect every push rod end for too much wear and configure the hydraulic tappets when needed, due to insufficient oil. To check the push rods, either roll them against a flat area or hold a light close to the push rods on top of the engine and note that any line or pattern on the push rods might show an issue with the engine cylinder head. Apply Mopar Engine Oil Supplement or a similar product to both ends of the push rods before reinstalling them in their previous places, ensuring the bottom end is centered in the seat of the tappet plunger cap. Spray the Mopar Oil Supplement or an alternative on the pivot joint where the rocker arm will rest, then place the rocker arms, pivots and bridges above each cylinder. Use a cordless drill to loosely insert each capscrew through the bridges, then turn each one by hand, switching sides each time, until they are tightened evenly to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) before covering the engine cylinder head with its cover.
