2002 Jeep Wrangler Lash Adjuster Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Lash Adjuster on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Before dealing with the lifter and lash adjuster, you need to remove the engine cylinder head cover, then the bridge and pivot assemblies and rocker arms by loosening the capscrews one turn at a time to keep them from being damaged. Following this, put the push rods aside, then grab the Hydraulic Valve Tappet Removal/Installation Tool and dive through the push rod openings to extract the tappets from the cylinder head. Put each tappet assembly in cleaning solvent to get rid of varnish, gum and sludge, then examine the tappet body for scuffs, making sure there are no signs of concave wear on each base by showing them with a straightedge; if concave wear is visible, change the camshaft and any bad tappets. First, coat each tappet with Mopar Engine Oil Supplement or an alternative and use the Hydraulic Valve Tappet Removal/Installation Tool to put each tappet into its proper bore. First, put the push rods back where they were before, then re-attach the rocker arms and bridge and pivot assemblies, leaving the capscrews a bit loose. Working one capscrew at a time, tighten every screw until they reach 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.), to prevent damage to the bridges before placing the cover back on the engine cylinder head.
