2002 Jeep Wrangler Starter Motor Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Starter Motor on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Before working on the starter motor, unplug the negative battery wire and lift the vehicle so it doesn't fall during the repair. Place your hand under the starter motor while you loosen and then take out the bolts joining it to the engine block. Let the starter motor down as much as possible so you can remove the nut connecting the starter solenoid B(+) terminal stud to the positive battery terminal, making sure the starter motor does not still hang from the wire harness. Disconnect the wire from the terminal on the starter solenoid and remove the battery analog terminal connected to the starter solenoid B(+) stud. Take off the starter motor and all the phim shims that were fitted within the engine block. In the installation process, make sure the starter motor is against the engine block and plug the solenoid terminal wire harness connector into the starter solenoid. Keep the starter motor wrapped in the wire harness to protect it from swinging from the back of the car. Connect the positive cable eyelet terminal to the stud on the starter solenoid B(+) terminal and tighten the nut following the tightening instructions on the table above. Place the starter motor and shims on the engine block and just tighten the two mounting bolts; thinner shims measure 0.381 mm (0.015 in.) thick. Secure your suspension because suspension kit installed tightens the bolts to 44.7 Nm (33 ft. lbs.).
