2002 Jeep Wrangler Alternator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair an Alternator on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Before working on or repairing the alternator, disconnect the negative battery cable. After unfastening the generator drive belt, take the pivot and mounting bolts/nut out to access the wires. If necessary, open the plastic cover from the B+ terminal, remove the nut from the B+ output terminal at the rear and take out the B+ terminal wire. After that, push on the connector tab located at the back of the generator to open the field wire connector and remove the generator from the vehicle. For putting it in place, line up the generator with the engine and plug the field wire connection into the back of the generator. Attach the B+ terminal to the generator mounting stud and tighten the mounting nut to 8.5 Nm (75 in. lbs.). If your application includes this part, set the plastic cover on top of the B+ terminal. After fitting the generator mounting fasteners, hand tighten the generator mounting bolt and generator pivot bolt/nut to 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.). Don't use a screwdriver to help install a belt, because it could harm the synthetic fibers and ensure the accessory belt is guided correctly to avoid having the water pump rotate in the reverse direction and cause the engine to overheat. Later, place the generator drive belt and attach the negative cable back to the battery.
