2002 Jeep Wrangler Universal Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Repair Universal Joints on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: To work on or repair just one of these, you should first take out the propeller shaft. Lightly tap the outside of the bearing cap assembly with a drift to remove the snap rings from each side of the yoke. Make sure a socket socket is in place under the bearing cap on the press, getting the yoke above ready. Attach another socket which is smaller in outside diameter than the bearing cap, to the upper bearing cap and push the lower cap down through the yoke. If you can't remove the bearing cap from the yoke, tap around the cap on the yoke ear to loosen it. Flip the yoke and after straightening the cross in the open hole, slowly press on the end of the cross to loosen the other cap. While assembling, run EP N.L.G.I. Grade 1 or 2 grease inside the yoke bores. Put the cross into the yoke with its lube fitting-if your towbar has one-pointing upward. Lay the bearing cap on top of the trunnion and make sure it's positioned so the needle bearings are upright within the cap and over the yoke. Push the cap part of the bearing into the hole of the yoke, insert the snap ring and then tap it tight. Follow the steps once more to install the other bearing cap. If the joint seems stiff or the yoke doesn't go smoothly, gently tap the yoke with a soft hammer to fit the needle bearings. Apply grease to the lube fitting, if there is one and then install the propeller shaft.
