2003 Jeep Wrangler Universal Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How Can Universal Joint Components Be Serviced and Replaced When Defective on 2003 Jeep Wrangler?
A: If one component in a single cardan U-joint becomes broken, the whole assembly must be taken out and replaced at once. Ensure you only put the narrow, forged part of the yoke between the vise jaws, so it isn't damaged while clamping. Removal of the axle shaft should be followed by removal of the eight bearing cap retaining snap rings. Before you take off the caps, add penetrating oil to help the caps move. For this procedure, place a socket with an inside diameter bigger than the bearing cap over the yoke with the cap you want to remove and another socket with an outside diameter smaller than the bearing cap beside the other bearing cap. Clamp the yoke, with the sockets inserted, into a vise and adjust the clamps to drive the bearing cap into the larger socket. After releasing the jaws, take out both the sockets and the bearing cap that got slightly pushed out of the yoke. Now, use the same procedure to install the other bearing cap and take off the spider from the propeller shaft yoke. Pour in wheel bearing lubricant from the center hole until the caps are about one-third filled. To facilitate installation, apply extreme pressure lithium-base lubricant to the wheel area. Put the spider in the yoke, insert the seals and bearings and top the spider by tapping in the bearing caps. Hold the socket against one bearing cap and secure the yoke with the socket in a vise so the vise forces the caps down into the yoke for installation of the retaining clips. After that, add the bearing cap retaining clips and the axle shaft.
