The Double Cardan universal joints cannot be repaired because they are not serviceable at an individual level i.e. as a combination they must be changed. The process will then begin by marking the propeller shaft yoke and link yoke to use in an assembly reference. Hit the bearing cap assembly with a drift on the outside of the bearing cap assembly to loosen the snap rings and take all the bearing caps off with their snap rings. When fitted-off any grease fittings. Place a socket on the press with an interior diameter that is greater than the dimension of the bearing cap in order to fit the link yoke under the bearing cap and the other socket with outside diameter that is smaller as compared to the bearing cap. On the outboard side of the link yoke, press one of the bearing caps far enough out so as to be able to grab the bearing cap with vise jaws, and then using the vise grips, grasp the protruding bearing cap and tap the link yoke with a mallet and drift to remove the bearing cap. Turn the assembly upside down and once again tap and press forcing the other bearing cap off. Disassembly continues by pressing the rest of the bearing caps out the opposite end of the link yoke by removing the cross centering kit assembly and spring (see illustration). To assemble, make sure that there is alignment mark that is up and down yoke on the link and propeller shaft and that the bearing cap contains needle bearing using the upright bearing cap so as not to damage these bearings. Then apply Extreme Pressure N.L.G.I. Grade 1 or 2 grease inside yoke bores, insert a cross in the propeller shaft yoke, and a bearing cap on top of the trunnion with it centered in the yoke bore. Lodge the bearing cap in yoke bore so as to clear the snap ring groove and set a snap ring. Turn over propeller shaft yoke and apply other bearing cap on the other trunnion and apply snap ring. Install link yoke on remaining trunnions, press bearing caps and install snap rings. Install the assembly of a centering kit inside link yoke and make sure that the spring is in its place. Two bearing caps are screwed on opposite trunnions of the now removable cross, and the open trunnions seated in the link yoke bores, the bearing caps in the centering kit. Install the snap rings, and seat them in the grooves by tapping on the remaining two bearing caps and then tap the snap rings. When the joint is returned to centre, by flexing it past centre in one, then in the other direction, it must tend to snap over centre in whichever direction it is fitted.
