2003 Dodge Caravan Speed Sensor Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain a Speed Sensor on the Rear Wheel on 2003 Dodge Caravan?
A: When servicing the rear wheel speed sensor, raise the car, then do not damage the electrical connectors during disconnection; check the connectors for any previous damage. Take away the grommet from the floor pan and disconnect the speed sensor cable from the connector. Handle the removal of the rear wheel speed sensor cable carefully; damaging the molded routing clips on the brake hose will make you replace the whole brake hose. Take out the speed sensor cable from the clips it presses into, then unbolt and remove the metal routing clip from the back of the axle. Pull out the secondary yellow clip at the rear of the wheel speed sensor head, push up on the retaining clip to release the sensor from the hub and bearing and then gently pull the sensor backward to remove it. In order to prevent the cable from touching anything it shouldn't and becoming overextended, make sure it sits correctly in retainers during installation. Dry and clean the wheel speed sensor before installing it. Should the metal sensor retaining clip not be in the neutral position as it came out of the box, install it from below by pushing upwards until you hear the click of it locking in place. Insert the sensor head into the rear of the hub and bearing and place it so the index tab matches the notch on the mounting hole. Once you feel resistance, the sensor should be snapped onto the metal retaining clip. Position the other yellow retaining clip over the head of the sensor so that its tabs are slide into place on the sides. Join the sensor cable beneath the leaf spring along the backside of the axle, twist it onto the routing clips on the rear brake flex hose and use the mount provided to tighten it to the rear axle at 16 Nm (140 in. lbs.). Connect the cable from the wheel speed sensor to the vehicle wiring harness and then secure and lock the connector. Put the speed sensor cable grommet into the floor pan hole, pushing it all the way in, drop the vehicle and take it out onto the road to confirm that everything works properly.
