2002 Dodge Caravan Speed Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain a Speed Sensor on the Rear Wheel on 2002 Dodge Caravan?
A: When working on the rear wheel speed sensor, ensure you don't damage the pins on the electrical connectors, check the connections for any prior damage and first Jackson screw up the plug with a socket wrench. Unfasten the grommet from the floor pan and cut the link from the speed sensor cable connector. Handle the removal of the rear wheel sensor cable with extra care to avoid breaking the routing clips on the brake hose, as replacing them means you'll also have to get a new brake hose. Lift the speed sensor cable away from the clips that secure it, then take the bolt connecting the metal routing clip to the axle and remove the sensor from the metal clip at the rear. Remove the secondary (yellow) retaining clip from the back of the sensor head, push up on it until it drops into place and while still holding it, pull back on the sensor head to take it off the wheel hub. You should place the wheel speed sensor cable with retainers to ensure it doesn't touch any moving locations or become too long, as both might lead to an open circuit. Be sure the wheel speed sensor is clean and not wet as you install it. If it's not installed correctly, install the holding clip from the bottom and press it upward until it clicks securely. Align the wheel speed sensor head into the rear part of the hub and bearing, with the index tab in place over the notch in the fixed hole and push firmly until you hear it snap into the metal retaining clip. With the wheel speed sensor head pointing up, slide the secondary (yellow) retaining clip on, aligning the tabs on each side. Route the sensor cable under the leaf spring, attach it to the routing clips on the rear brake flex hose at the rear axle and bolts the sensor to the axle, remembering to tighten further it with a torque of 16 Nm (140 in. lbs.). Attach the wheel speed sensor cable to the vehicle's wiring harness while making sure the make and lock the connector properly. Attach the grommet from the speed sensor cable to the hole in the floor pan, making sure it is completely seated, lift the vehicle and test the base and ABS braking systems to confirm they are working properly as you drive.
