Both parts of the Viton seal, the upper and lower, are part of the service seal and the upper half can be installed on and off the crankshaft, while the lower requires the rear main bearing cap to be removed for installation. If the upper seal is being changed without the crankshaft, first get rid of the crankshaft and remove the old seal. If you have installed the crankshaft, remove the oil pan, oil pump and rear main bearing cap, getting rid of the old lower oil seal and carefully pulling out the upper oil seal. When installing, scrub the rear cap of the cylinder block clean and check that there is no rubbish in the oil hole. Apply a small amount of oil to the new upper seal lip, fit the white side of the oil seal into the rear bank of the engine and gently move the crankshaft into the engine. Rub the new lower seal lips with a little oil and slide the new lower rear bearing oil seal into the bearing cap with the white paint facing out. Coat the rear main bearing cap with a 5 mm drop of Mopar Gasket Maker, do not let it reach the rubber seal and then immediately attach it to the top of the cylinder block. Secure the rear cap, using the cap slot, the alignment dowel and the cap bolts, making sure you aren't over machining it after assembly and not striking it more than so for proper fit. After cleaning and oiling all cap bolts, fit all main bearing caps on and alternately screw each bolt to 115 Nm. Secure the oil pump after that and around the bearing cap and block, apply a thin line of Mopar GEN II Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant. Then ensure some sealant squeezes out to fill the gap and wipe off any extra sealant on the oil pan's bottom edge just before installing the pan. Before the lower seal, wipe clean the rear surface of the main cap, install a new upper seal in place, light oil the bottom seal lips and insert the new one into the bearing cap, marking the white paint to face the back of the seal. A 5 mm thickness of Mopar Gasket Maker should be applied to both sides of the rear main bearing cap and then the bearing cap should be installed into the cylinder block. Align the bearing cap, then fasten it with cleaned and oiled cap bolts, alternately torquing to 115 Nm. Next, seal the bearing cap-to-block connection and install the oil pump, then immediately install the oil pan.
