2002 Dodge Dakota Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: Can You Replace the Crankshaft Seal Without Removing the Timing Chain Cover on 2002 Dodge Dakota?
A: Take off the negative cable from the battery and then remove the vibration damper to complete the front crankshaft seal replacement without touching the timing chain cover. Check the oil seal to the crankshaft using the seal installation and alignment tool. It should go on smoothly and, if it's a problem, the cover must be properly aligned and installed once more. Gently extract the oil seal from the outside using a proper prying tool, so that the seal bore inside the cover remains clean and intact. The right way to install is to slide the smaller part of the oil seal over Front Oil Seal Installation Tool 6635. After placing the seal and tool on the crankshaft, tighten the vibration damper bolt to pull the seal into place. After that, take out the vibration damper's bolt and seal installation tool, inspect the seal flange on the vibration damper, reinstall the vibration damper and finally link the negative cable to the battery.
