2003 Dodge Dakota Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on 2003 Dodge Dakota?
A: Shut down the engine first, then check the power steering fluid level so that moving parts won't harm you as you work. Always put Mopar (R) Atf+4 in the power steering system and do not overfill it, because other fluids could damage the pump and system. Wipe the filler cap, open it, check the fluid and expect the dipstick to show Cold in normal temperatures. Set the steering wheel as far to the left as you can and pour the pump fluid into the reservoir to its proper point, then allow the fluid to sit for at least two minutes. With your engine turned off, lift the front wheels and turn your steering wheel from lock to lock 20 or 40 times (according to the vehicle) and check the fluid. After starting the engine, watch the fluid level while it is at an idle. After letting the front wheels down and running the engine at idle for two minutes, turn the steering wheel all the way in both directions to confirm that the power assist works and that the pump is silent. Should the fluid be very foamy or milky, give the vehicle a few moments and repeat the test. Don't drive your car with foamy brake fluid for a long time because it can damage the pump.
