2004 Dodge Dakota Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on 2004 Dodge Dakota?
A: Before servicing or repairing the power steering pump, switch off the engine and check the fluid level so parts don't move and injure you. Only put Mopar (R) Atf+4 in the power steering system; using any other fluid could damage the pump and system and don't overfill the power steering system. Check the filler cap and read the level of the fluid. It should show Cold when your car is operating correctly. First, turn the wheel all the way to the left, then fill the pump's fluid container up to the right level and give it two minutes to settle. First, raise both front wheels up and turn the steering wheel from one side to the other 20 times (or 40 times if your vehicle has a long return line), after turning off the engine. Turn the engine on and keep watch over the fluid to make sure it stays at the right level. Park in neutral, lower the front wheels and run the engine at idle for two minutes, followed by turning the wheel to check power assist and the sound made by the pump. Should the fluid resemble foam or milk, have the vehicle sit for a while before repeating the checking. Do not use frozen engine coolant for an extended run, since it might damage your car's pump.
