2003 Dodge Durango Belt Tensioner Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Install a Belt Tensioner on a 4.7L Engine on 2003 Dodge Durango?
A: An indexing spot is found on the back of the tensioner and on the housing and the tensioner must be positioned so the spot is just below 24 mm (0.94 inches) from the indexing hole when you install a new belt within 15 minutes. When this requirement isn't met, look for: a wrong belt, worn bearings on the A/C compressor, power steering pump, water pump, idler pulley or generator, pulleys not tightened properly, a difference in accessory shaft angle or the belt not connecting to the accessories as specified. You should replace your old belt if the tensioner's indexing arrow points to the lowest tension indicator, because that's the place it stops. Remove the belt that runs to the accessory drive first and next remove the parts of the tensioner assembly from the mounting bracket. The spring tension is very high during springs, so do not take apart the automatic tensioner, except for the pulley, as it is serviced as an assembly. After that, get rid of the bolt and the pulley mounted to the tensioner. Near the beginning, place the pulley and its bolt into the tensioner and tighten the bolt until it registers 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) of torque. Fit the tensioner indexing pin into the bolt's head, install and tighten the bolt with a torque wrench set to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). Then, fit the accessory drive belt and adjust it so that the belt's indexing marks line up.
