2003 Dodge Durango Water Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Replace the Water Pump on a 4.7L Engine on 2003 Dodge Durango?
A: The water pump on these engines is fastened to the lid of the engine timing chain case. First, remove the negative battery cable and drain the liquid from the car's cooling system. Take out the fan/viscous fan drive from the water pump while still leaving it connected to the vehicle. Use either special clamp tool number 6094 or Snap-On clamp tool number HPC-20 when servicing constant tension hose clamps and always remember to wear safety glasses. Replacement of the constant tension clamps should use only clamps with the same numbers or letters as the original ones. If you are installing a new water pump, don't take the fan blade assembly off the thermal viscous fan drive. After that, loosen two fan shroud-to-radiator screws, remove the coolant overflow hose, windshield washer fluid hose, washer pump electrical connector and pull out the upper fan shroud and its matching fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly. Store your thermal viscous fan drive upright to stop the silicone fluid from becoming mixed with the lubricant. Slide out the accessory drive belt, loosen the lower radiator hose clamp and move the lower hose at the water pump as well. Gently extract all the bolts from the pump mount except for one stud bolt matched to its location, without attempting to pry the pump off the case. Remove the water pump and throw out the old gasket and remember not to harm the sealing surface as you clean the mating surface. Look for any signs of cracks, leaks where the shaft seal is, rough turning bearings or the impeller touching either the pump body or the cover housing the timing chain. Before assembly, tidy the matching surface of the gasket, arrange the new gasket and water pump and fix the mounting bolts, turning them at 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.) torque. Confirm that the impeller of the pump does not touch the timing chain case or cover, link the radiator lower hose to the water pump, ease up on the belt tensioner and connect the drive belt, checking it for the right routing to keep from overheating. Join together both sections of the upper fan shroud and then install the fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly at the top of the radiator for good airflow. Attach the two screws between the fan shroud and the radiator, ensure the fan blade tips are at least 25 mm (1.0 inches) from the shroud and fix the fan blade/viscous fan drive assembly onto the water pump shaft. Put coolant into the system, connect the negative battery cable, start the engine and make sure there are no leaks.
