2002 Dodge Durango Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering System on 2002 Dodge Durango?
A: When servicing or repairing the rack and pinion, you should first lift and secure the vehicle. Take off the bolts from the tie rods and use Puller C-3894-A to pull the tie rod off the knuckles. After that, pull the steering lines from around the rack and pinion, then unscrew the bolt holding the lower coupler and slip the coupler off the rack and pinion. Take off the bolts that hold the rack and pinion to the front crossmember and remove the rack and pinion. Before assembling the new rack and pinion, check the bushings and use replacements for any that do not look good. Place the selected suspension equipment onto the front crossmember and use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts to 271 Nm (200 ft. lbs.). Fit the shaft coupler to the rack and pinion, replace the bolt and turn it as far as possible-its final torque should be 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.). Remove any dirt from the tie rod end studs and knuckle tapers and place the tie rod ends into the knuckles, followed by a tightening of the nuts to 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.). Join the power steering lines back to the rack and pinion and tighten the hose to a torque of 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.). Once the support is gone, lower the car, put fluid in the system and make the adjustment to the toe position.
