2003 Dodge Durango Timing Cover Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Timing Cover on 2003 Dodge Durango?
A: First, take off the battery's negative cable and drain the coolant before removing the timing belt/chain cover. Following this, take out the fan assembly, the fan and fan grille, unplug the heater hoses connected to the timing cover and remove the lower hose at the engine from the radiator. The next two parts to deal with are removing the crankshaft damper and then the accessory drive belt tensioner assembly, before you remove the generator and the A/C compressor. Then, prise off the cover and take out the gasket. Clean the area on top of the engine and under the cover before installing. If the gasket looks worn, replace it too. Slide the shifter door cover and gasket into place and tighten the screws from the top one down to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Rebuild the machine by adding back the A/C compressor, generator, crankshaft damper and accessory drive belt tensioner assembly. After that, refit the radiator lower hose as well as both heater hoses, after which reinstall the shroud and the viscous fan drive assembly. After that, top up the cooling system and put the battery negative cable back in place.
