2004 Dodge Durango Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain the Timing Cover on 2004 Dodge Durango?
A: Start by removing the negative battery cable and running off all the coolant before working on the timing cover. Uninstall the electric cooling fan and its shroud, then take out the radiator fan. Remove both heater hoses from the side of the timing cover and likewise the lower radiator hose from the engine. After that, detach the accessory drive belt tensioner assembly (1), crankshaft damper, the generator and A/C compressor. The 3.7L engine's front cover is sealed to the engine block with an anaerobic sealer instead of a gasket, so use Mopar Engine RTV sealant whenever the cover needs to be removed or replaced. You do not need to take out your water pump to adjust the timing cover. Remove the screws that fix the timing cover to the engine block and lift off the cover. During installation, wash the timing chain cover and block with rubbing alcohol only; do not use oil or abrasive cleaning agents on the surface to avoid harming it. If there are any issues found in the Wrings (2), replace them as needed. Put Mopar Engine RTV sealer on the front cover making a bead 3 to 4 mm thick, then install the cover and tighten all its fasteners in order to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.). Securely tighten the crankshaft damper, A/C compressor, generator and accessory drive belt tensioner. Attach the upper and lower radiator hoses, both heater hoses and the radiator fan. Once the cooling system has been filled, connect the battery negative cable back in.
