2003 Dodge Neon Alternator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair an Alternator on 2003 Dodge Neon?
A: Before starting on the alternator, first detach the negative battery cable. Remove the jam nut and turn the adjustment bolt, lifting and supporting the car afterward. Remove the cover under the front splash shield, unbolt the lower generator mount and take off the generator drive belt. Disconnect the connector on the generator field circuit by pushing the RED locking tab, then take out the terminal nut and wire from the B+ connector. Then, remove the mounting bolts on top and bottom and raise the generator off the pivot bracket, after which the pivot bracket needs to be removed. First, place the generator in the wheel well, then connect the lower pivot bracket and tighten those bolts to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Loosey tighten all but one mounting bolt, plug the gray field circuit connector back in by pushing the red button on top and put the B+ terminal nut and wire into their places. Put the generator drive belt in place, raise the vehicle and tighten it as dictated by the Cooling System requirements. Fasten the adjustment bolt and nut, raise the car and then tighten the lower mounting bolt to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). After that, replace the underguards and hook up the main battery cable.
