2003 Dodge Neon Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Cover on 2003 Dodge Neon?
A: Before working on the timing cover, disconnect the battery cable and remove the screw or bolt that fastens the engine to the body. After that, remove the top torque strut and the belt connecting the steering/air conditioning compressors, then lift the car on a hoist and remove the accessory drive belt splash shield. After that, remove the drive belt for the generator, the crankshaft damper bolt and the crankshaft damper. After taking out the lower torque strut, lift the car, place a jack beneath the engine to hold it and use a stand to support it. Unbolt the right engine mount to engine mount bracket and let the engine down far enough that you can remove the lower engine mount bracket bolt. Lift the engine to get enough space to remove the bracket and do not disconnect the power steering pump lines as you take it out. Take out the two remaining bolts holding the engine mount bracket to the engine and disconnect the fasteners on the front timing belt cover. On the back of the engine, you have to remove the front timing belt cover, the timing belt and the tensioner assembly first. With Special Tool C-4687 and the modified Adaptor C-4687-1, clamp the camshaft sprocket still while removing the bolt, then take off the camshaft sprocket as well as the rear cover's bolts to remove the rear cover. The first step in installation is to attach the rear cover while tightening the bolts to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.), then install the camshaft sprocket without using an impact wrench. Secure the camshaft sprocket bolt to a torque of 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.) while you're using the special tools to hold the sprocket in place. Then, tighten the timing belt tensioner assembly and the timing belt as well. Then, fit the front timing belt cover, set the bracket for the engine mount and start the two upper bolts with your hand. Place the engine so the bottom is near the floor, install the first bolt and tighten it to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.). Then raise the engine and tighten the two upper bracket bolts to the same torque. Installed the power steering pump assembly, then lowered the engine and set the right engine mount to engine mount bracket with bolt and a tightening force of 118 Nm (87 ft. lbs.). With the jack out, drive the vehicle up on the hoist and fit the lower torque strut. Hold the crankshaft damper with the supplied bolt and torque it to 136 Nm (100 ft. lbs.), after that attach the accessory drive belts and the splash shield. Now, bring the vehicle down, add on the upper torque strut, secure the ground strap to the engine mount bracket and attach the negative battery cable back.
