2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Alternator Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair an Alternator on 2003 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before starting the repair process on the alternator, disconnect the negative battery cable to avoid harm to you or the car's electrical system. To disconnect the B+ terminal, take out the drive belt, remove the insulator cap from the B+ terminal and get rid of the nut at the rear of the generator. Next, push on the tab at the rear of the generator's field wire connector to disconnect it. After that, remove the rear vertical generator bolt and the two front horizontal generator bolts and move the generator from the vehicle. For installation, secure the generator to the engine and put in the two horizontal bolts and one vertical bolt, tightening them according to the torque: 55 Nm for the vertical bolt and the long horizontal one and 74 Nm for the short horizontal bolt. Secure the field wire connector to the rear of the generator, install the B+ terminal eyelet onto the output stud and tighten the mounting nut as the torque requirement says. Do not try to pull a belt over the pulley rim using a screwdriver, because this can ruin the synthetic fiber. Make sure the serpentine accessory belt is fitted correctly, so there is no chance of the water pump rotating in the wrong direction which might cause engine overheating. The last step involves putting on the generator drive belt and reconnecting the negative battery cable.
