2004 Dodge Ram 1500 Alternator Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix an Alternator on 2004 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Always disconnect the negative battery cable before you start servicing or repairing the alternator, to avoid harming the electrical parts. Take off the generator drive belt according to the guidance for the Cooling System. Release the plastic lid from the B+ output terminal, access the mounting nut on the back of the generator and remove the nut and the terminal too. Pull on the connector tab at the field wire plug at the back of the generator, then remove one of the rear bolts holding the generator to the vertical frame. After that, get rid of the two bolts that link the front horizontal generator mounts to the vehicle and remove the generator. Set up the generator to face the engine, then put in the two horizontal bolts and one vertical bolt, tightening all of them according to Torque Specifications. First, snap the field wire connector into the generator's rear, place the B+ terminal eyelet on the output stud and then tighten the mounting nut according to the Torque Specifications. It's important not to use a screwdriver to force a belt over a pulley rim, because you may damage the synthetic fibers. Make sure the serpentine belt is fitted correctly to prevent the water pump from turning the wrong way which could overheat the engine; use the belt routing label beside the engine or the Belt Schematics in the section about the Cooling System. After that, follow the Cooling System procedure to put the generator drive belt in place and then link the negative battery cable once more.
