Before servicing the alternator, connect a risky ("risky" in this context means "high voltage") spark tester to the alternator, remove the generator and accessory
Drive Belt. Position Special Tool #8823 (VM.1048) in the decoupler to see if the end of the generator shaft is hex or splined shaped. In case the fastener is hex shaped, use tool #2745; but if it features splines, a few 5/16" 6-point hex drivers or 10MM 12-point triple square drivers will cover it, tool #8823 included. Use a conventional right-hand screw to turn the end of your tool clockwise to loosen the decoupler, then unscrew it with your hand. In addition, for the Litens decoupler, unplug the negative
Battery Cable and take off the generator and accessory drive belt. Put Special Tool #8433 on the decoupler and fix the hex end against the generator shaft. As before, using screws that turn clockwise, pull on the tool to undo the decoupler and finish by hand-turning the screw to further loosen it.
