How to Maintain and Repair a Drive Shaft on 2003 Dodge Ram 1500?

The first step in servicing and repairing the drive/propeller shaft is to check the angles of both front and rear propeller shafts. Support the car on each axle so it sits at the same height which ensures the wheels and propeller shaft move easily. Get rid of the external bearing snap rings on the universal joint so the protractor base lays cleanly. Between oil main bearing journals, turn the shaft so the transmission/transfer case output yoke bearing is on the lower side. Whenever measuring, start at the front and go to the rear and remain on the same side of the vehicle. Set the MIP 7663 on the yoke shaft beside the filter, make the bubble in the sight glass center and note down the reading to have the transmission yoke Output Angle. Turn the propeller shaft clockwise 90 degrees, set the Inclinometer on the yoke bearing as before, center the bubble and log the measurement for your Propeller Shaft Angle. Turn the propeller shaft another 90 degrees and set the Inclinometer on the companion flange yoke bearing linear with the shaft, with the bubble centered. Be sure to note the angle for the Companion Flange Input Angle. Subtraction of the Transmission/Transfer Case 360° angled figure (C) from the wheel 360° angled figure (A) yields the Output Operating Angle and the same goes for the axle Input Operating Angle with C and B. Ideally, the operating angles should not exceed 1°, should be less than 3° and should at the very least include a continuous operating angle of 1/2 degree. You measure angles in a two-piece propeller shaft just like you do with a one-piece shaft.
