2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Water Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain a Water Pump on 3.7L/4.7L Engines on 2003 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: The first step in serving the water pump on these engines is to take off the negative battery cable and drain the coolant system. Remove the fan/viscous fan drive assembly from the water pump, but do not take it apart from the vehicle. Make sure to have and use tools made for tension hose clamps and don't forget to protect your eyes with safety glasses. If the water pump must be replaced, don't loosen the assembly holding the fan blade to the viscous thermal fan drive. After that, take out the radiator fan, accessory drive belt and lower hose clamp before you remove the lower radiator hose from the water pump. Don't pry on the timing chain cover/case while taking out the water pump mounting bolts. Replace the water pump, throw away the old gasket and scrub the gasket surface where it connects but don't damage any sealing area. Make sure the water pump assembly doesn't have any cracks, leaks or signs of excessive wear. Before installation, make sure the gasket surfaces are clean, then slip on the new gasket, connect the water pump and fasten it with the bolts at 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.). Make sure there is no friction between the pump impeller and the timing chain case/cover as it turns. Place the lower radiator hose back in its position, ease up the tension on the belt tensioner and install the drive belt by checking it is routed properly to avoid overheating. Place the radiator fan in position, fill the coolant into the system, connect the negative battery cable again and then turn on the engine to look for leaks.
