2003 Dodge Ram 1500 Belt Tensioner Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install a Belt Tensioner on 3.7L and 4.7L Engines on 2003 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: On the 3.7L and 4.7L engines, when securing a new belt, the tensioner's indexing tang and the indexing stop on the housing should be less than 24 mm (0.94 inches) apart. If this is not the problem, make sure the belt is not too short or too wide, that all bearings on the A/C compressor, power steering pump, water pump, idler pulley or generator are in good shape, your pulleys aren't loose, your accessories aren't misaligned and your belt is fitted properly. You need to change a used belt when the tensioner indexing arrow points to the minimum tension indicator, because the tensioner stops working from there. You should remove the accessory drive belt first, followed by the tensioner assembly from the bracket. It's important to leave the automatic tensioner intact, because it is serviced as a unit except for the pulley which can be disassembled separately. Then, get rid of the bolt and the pulley from the tensioner. To attach the pulley and bolt, tighten the bolt on the tensioner to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) torque. On the back of the tensioner, place the indexing slot over the bolt head on the front cover, then mount and tighten the bolt to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). After that, set the accessory drive belt and confirm its belt indexing marks.
